Estimada Presidenta Shalala:Nosotros, académicos de Estados Unidos y ex-alumnos de la Universidad de Miami, le expresamos nuestra más profunda indignación con respecto al evento que tuvo lugar el 12 de octubre del 2010, en el Instituto de Estudios Cubanos y Cubano-Americanos (ICCAS) de la Universidad de Miami. En este acto se rindió homenaje al terrorista convicto Orlando Bosch.
Orlando Bosch ha sido arrestado, enjuiciado y sentenciado por innumerables actos terroristas en Venezuela, Estados Unidos y otros países. En 1968, fue condenado a 10 años de privación de libertad por el atentado a un buque polaco que se encontraba anclado en uno de los muelles de Miami. Posteriormente, cumplió diez años de cárcel en Venezuela por el derribo de un avión cubano el 6 de octubre de 1976, sabotaje en el que perdieron la vida las 73 personas a bordo. El Fiscal General de Estados Unidos Dick Thornburgh lo calificó como “terrorista sin arrepentimiento” (“unrepentant terrorist”), y el Fiscal General Asociado Joe D. Whitley se refirió a él como una “amenaza a la Seguridad Nacional” (“a threat to National Security”) (Exclusion Proceeding for Orlando Busch Ávila; ver documentación adjunta). Ambos Fiscales se desempeñaron en sus funciones de leguleyos durante la Administración de George H. W. Bush.
Documentos de la CIA y del FBI recientemente desclasificados (disponibles en Internet), son prueba fehaciente de la validez de las aseveraciones de estos Fiscales. Por ejemplo, un informe de 1979 reportó la opinión de Bosch sobre la voladura del avión de Cubana, con respecto a lo cual expresó: “Hay momentos en que no se puede evitar hacer daño a gente inocente” (Appendix to Hearings). Por otra parte, un cable del FBI con fecha del 14 de octubre de 1976 refleja las palabras de Luis Posada Carriles —“compañero de lucha” de Bosch—, quien dijo que “Orlando sabía todos los detalles” del avión que iba a ser derribado (Intelligence Information Cable).
Solicitamos que se inicie con la mayor premura una investigación acerca de este homenaje, en el cual figuró como telón de fondo el logotipo de la Universidad de Miami. Como institución de altos estudios que es, la Universidad de Miami tiene una misión educativa, y a la vez, una insoslayable función de responsabilidad social. Rendir honores a un terrorista, presentándolo como modelo para una comunidad, atenta contra los principios básicos de la academia.
